Ahh... April 1st, a day where you can pull as many pranks as you want and get away with it scott-free. Minecraft is no exception, as Mojang has made their fair share of jokes and pranks on April Fools. As April 1st, 2017 is approaching fast, I thought it might be fun to take a look back and  cover Mojang's previous April Fools jokes that have became very popular before a new bit of tom foolery is thrown up us. is pushed out?

April 1st, 2011 - The infamous DLC Chest

Incase you forgot about this tiny little update, Mojang decided to poke a bit a fun at all of the DLC problems that had been(and continue) to plaque the Gaming Industry with this tiny bit of fun for their first April Fools prank.

The Locked Chest was a naturally generated block used as the premise of Notch's 2011 April Fools Day joke. If you attemped to open the chest, a message would appear stating that a 'Steve Co. Supply Crate Key' is needed to open the chest, and that one could be purchased at the Minecraft Store.

This joke is a reference to the Team Fortress 2 item drop system, where you can pick up an item while playing. One of the items that you could recieve is called a 'Mann Co. Supply Crate', which required a key purchased from the Mann Co. Store, a microtransaction system integrated into the Steam Gaming Client. The font used in the Minecraft Store GUI is also the same one used in Team Fortress 2.

Within the Minecraft Store, there were various Easter Eggs.

If you clicked on the proceed to checkout button, a Velociraptor from the film Jurrastic Park would growl loudly and fly across the screen. Once clicked, the Proceed button would also changed it's display name to 'Fiddlesticks!!!1'. If you tried to purchase over $10,000 worth of items, the cart would cause a popup window asking if you were prone to seizures. Clicking the OK button would make the screen start flashing random colors. Later, the popup window was changed to say: "If you are prone to seizures, click Cancel." This was likely done to avoid lawsuits because of the rapidly changing color flashes.

The "Minecraft DLC" was originally viewable only on However, after the recent Microsoft-styled updates that happened to the site recently, this April Fools joke as been lost. However, due to the magic of the Wayback Machine, we can check it out in person by going here. Unfortunately, it doesn't fully work due to how the Wayback Machine stores it's webpages, you can still see it for yourself if you wanted to see what was offered in the store.

After April 1st, 2011, these chests would slowly decay from the normal world, but could be saved if blown up by a piece of TNT and picked up as an item. The item form of this block remained in the game for a long while until it was finally replaced with a brand new block.

April 1st, 2012 - Marshmallow Creeps

During the months of February, March, and April of 2012, Mojang as busy bying the Bukkit Dev Team(I'm sure that you probably remember all of the crazy drama that happened with that). So there wasn't any real April Fools joke from Mojang in 2012. Atleast, I couldn't find any information on any. And I don't personally recall any April Fools Jokes happening in 2012(even the Minecraft Wiki doesn't mention any April Fools Jokes Happening in 2012). The only real thing I could find Minecraft related was designing and offering these "Minecraft Marshmellow Creeps". They were really cute, but it was a prank.

April 1st, 2013 - Minecraft 2.0

On April 1st, 2013, Mojang released a hoax announcement for Minecraft 2.0, a new game they had supposedly been working on for two years, describing how it would "bring blocky simulation games to the next level". The post also contained a changelog comprised mostly of nonsensical changes, such as a new slab of TNT called the Etho Slab, the addition of Lapis Lazuli Blocks(which were actually added in a later update), and Redstone Blocks(which were also added in a later update). Although lacking most of the promised additions, Minecraft 2.0 was produced and released to select celebrity individuals to showcase to the public as part of the joke.

I think what's really interestig is how despite ir being a joke version, a large amount of the features in the joke version were added to the game in later updates, the Coal Blocks and Tinted Glass being good examples.

The update itself had a crazy amount of weird changes, like Blue Chickens that would randomly spit out Diamond or Lapis. Check out the video below if you want to watch the other things that this update brought.

April 1st, 2014 - The Villagers take over Minecraft

On April 1st, 2014, Mojang announced on their official website the following:

"The long-nosed villagers introduced in Minecraft beta 1.9 have become sentient. They have taken over our skin servers and content delivery networks (CDN), so unfortunately you will not be able to change your skins until we fix the problem. We are desperately trying our best to pull the plugs, but we should prepare ourselves to serve under our new villager overlords. Singularity may be upon us."

This has got to be one of the funniest updates or changes to Minecraft in the world. I actually wish that they would make this an annual thing.

In-game, villagers still acted the same(with their programmed A.I.), but they made different sounds. Every player's skin was replaced by a Villager Skin, complete with the trademark nose. Not all players had the same Villager Skin though. Skins varied by player. Other Villager noises were implanted in non-villager parts of the game. All noises were replaced with the sound effects of Element Animation's "TEAVSRP"(The Element Animation Villager Sounds Resource Pack). Mojang also added in-game Villager music. The title screen music contains a parody of the Game of Thrones theme, due to the new series astarting in early April and also because of it being included in the original trailer for "TEAVSRP". Jeb also claimed that the Villagers also got into his Twitter account.

You can actually still download the Villager sounds if you want to enjoy maybe messing with your kid, brother, sister, or something the next day they get on Minecraft. Go to their official Twitter page for the download link.

You can download them from there(and you know that it is a legitimate download because it's on their official Twitter page).

April 1st, 2015 - The Love and Hugs Update

On April 1, 2015, Mojang released a hoax announcement for 1.10, also known as The Love and Hugs Update. 15w14a was the first, and only, hoax snapshot released for 1.10. Arguably, this is also the first snapshot released in 2015.

Added features include the Love Meter, Obsidian Boats, Potions of Caring and Sharing, and the removal of all Graphics Options(although they still worked, just without titles).

The Love Meter would fill up as you take damage or left-click on mobs. Collecting 8 lines of hearts unlocks a game called Minescreeper, which is basically Minesweeper textured like Minecraft. On the top of the screen is the Minecraft logo, with "CRAFT" crossed out and "SCREEPER" written over it.

Obsidian boats would sink instead of float, and could be crafted with 5 Obsidian Blocks in the shape of a "U" in a crafting table. The ID name was "minecraft:obsidian_boat" and had an item number of 432.

Potion of Caring would give mods the AI to move towards the nearest mob as if it were going to attack it. Potion of Sharing would drop items in a random amount of time, ranging from food to rate items, like Saddles and Diamonds. Both these potions replaced the data values for Weakness and Poison potions.

Other changes include the removal of combat, the removal of dying, the ability to only have one world, Realms being unavailable(due to the "-demo" flag being executed even if the game is purchased), and Dungeons being replaced with Homes. Other generated structures have also had their traps removed.

Perhapse the most interesting addition was a QR code that generates on superflat worlds near x=0, z=0 entirely out of snow. Scanning it would reveal the name of the 1.9 update.

Mobs have also had various changes, which you can see all of them by going to the Minecraft Wiki page.

Overall, this update was one of the funniest April Fools updates that Minecraft has ever seen, but it still doesn't beat the Villager Takeover prank!

April 1st, 2016 - The Trendy Update

On March 31, 2016, Mojang released a hoax announcement for 1.RV, also known as the Trendy Update. 1.RV-Pre1 was the first and only pre-release for the joke update. It was unfortunately removed from the Launcher, so finding this version is a lot more difficult now.

Funny features introduced in this joke update include: USB Charger Blocks, Reality Vision, Ankle Monitor, and the Smarter Watch.

The USB charger block acts exactly like a Redstone Block, emitting a redstone signal strength of 15. They were mainly used as decoration blocks, and could be crafted with this recipe in a crafting table:

The Reality Vision would do several things. It would show a minimap in the bottom center of the screen(which moves when the player's camera moves). It also made a sound when equipted, and displayed a vision overlay(similar to the Pumpkin Overlay). Signs would also display the word "OBEY" whenever looked at, which is a reference to the movie They Live.

The Ankle Monitor could be equipted VIA the boots slot, and could not be removed unless in creative mode. This behavior was added in a recent update as the "Curse of Binding" enchantment. IT would also give you the Slowness 1 effect, and constantly output the following message while in the overworld: "CURFEW WARNING! You are violating your house arrest! Get back by X meters!" X represents the amount of meters traveled from the world spawn. When in another dimention, it would display various other messages from the monitor in a special order. For example: "CURFEW WARNING!" You are violating your house arrest! Uuuh... where are you, anyway?"

The Smarter Watch is equipted in the off-hand slot, and would show the time above the hotbar where item tooltips are shown in human readable format(18:00, and 22:00 for example). It also gives you notifications, and makes a sould whenever one is recieved. Notifications are shown in chat whenever a statistic reaches 10, 20, 30 ... 100, 200, 300 ... etc. For example: "Notice! [Distance Walked] is now 300!" Other messages are shown when you take damage and sometimes even shows item specific information in chat when you craft items.

There are also some smaller changes, including mobs being able to spawn wearing the new gear, and being unable to attack when wearing the Reality Vision(except for Endermen).

Some other small things to note is that the sounds are stored in "minecraft/sounds/buzzwords/sound_name.ogg" where sound_name is replaced with the actual name of the sound, an example being "equipvr.ogg".The overlay for the Reality Vision is called "cantseeshitcaptain.png" in the assests folder. This is a reference to a popular meme from the TV show "Star Trek".

There are also other things included within this joke snapshot, which you can read about on the Minecraft Wiki page.

What I find creepy about this joke update is that a lot of the features and new gear show us what our society is really headed for, a world full of non-stop surveliance and no privacy what so ever. LEt's hope that our world never goes down that path.

April 1st, 2017.....

Mojang has definantly kept us on our toes and laughing with there random surprises past, and we are hoping that this year's Minecraft April Fools joke is going to be just as great and funny as their previous ones.
